Making An Adoption Plan

Almost everyone knows someone who’s either been adopted or is an adoptive parent. It’s becoming more and more common these days.

Like all of your options, adoption is not an easy choice to make, but sometimes the hardest decisions turn out to be the best ones we’ve ever made.

Choosing adoption requires a great deal of support and counseling to determine if it is the answer for you. We’re here to discuss the process, offer information, and make adoption referrals.

The Adoption Process

Before beginning the process, you need an adoption specialist you can trust. A reputable agency will charge you nothing during the entire process. They walk you through every stage beforehand and discuss the different adoption plans.

In many cases, financial assistance for medical and living expenses is available for the birth mother. Be sure to ask the agency what type of assistance is available.

The number one concern of any woman considering adoption is finding the perfect family to raise her child. Helping a birth mother and potential adoptive couple find one another is every agency’s foremost task.

The Adoption Plans

As the birth mom, you select the plan you’re most comfortable with and if you like, choose the adoptive couple.

Open Adoption

If you want to communicate with your child and their adoptive family after placement, choose open adoption. This plan allows you to have direct contact with one another. You’ll exchange phone numbers, full names, addresses, and emails.

Closed Adoption

Many years ago, closed adoption plans were all there was. At that time, unexpected pregnancies for unwed mothers were unacceptable. Today, some women choose closed adoption because they feel it will help them move on.

Semi-Open Adoption

A semi-open adoption allows you to communicate with your child and adoptive family, but a third party handles the contact. In other words, you send letters or emails to the adoption agency, and they forward them to your child and family.

Making Your Adoption Decision

Only you can determine if placing your child for adoption is the best decision. As you contact possible agencies or other adoption specialists, remember, you are only getting information, not committing. The final decision comes after your baby is born.
