Are you facing an unplanned pregnancy and unsure of what to do next? Before deciding to take the abortion pill, it is essential to know that having an abortion does not come without risks.

Although the abortion pill may sound like a simple way to end your pregnancy, it can lead to a variety of physical and mental health issues.

Continue reading to understand the risks of the abortion pill so that you can confidently make an informed decision about your pregnancy.

What is the Abortion Pill?

The “abortion pill” is also known as a medical abortion. In a medical abortion, two drugs are given to terminate the pregnancy, and according to the FDA, it must be performed within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.

First, mifepristone leads to the shedding of the uterine lining, preventing the uterus from sustaining the pregnancy. Then misoprostol is used to create uterine contractions and bleeding to pass the pregnancy through the vagina.

The Risks of the Abortion Pill

Incomplete Abortion

An incomplete abortion occurs when a portion of the pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus after an abortion. If this happens, a surgical abortion may then be needed to remove the rest of your pregnancy to prevent further complications.

Infection

An infection can develop after an abortion and can spread and cause damage to other organs. Following an abortion, signs of infection, like a fever lasting more than 24 hours or foul-smelling vaginal discharge, should be reported to a medical provider immediately.

Heavy and Prolonged Bleeding

Vaginal bleeding after abortion should also be monitored. If you are soaking through more than two pads per hour for two hours, you should seek medical help.

Mental Health Risks

Along with the physical risks, you need to consider the mental health impacts of the abortion pill.

Abortion can lead to long-term mental health issues, including:

  • Depression disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Suicidal behaviors
  • Substance abuse
