How Does Abortion Pill Reversal Treatment Work?

To understand how abortion pill reversal (APR) treatment works, it’s important to know how the abortion pill, also called medical abortion, works.

Medical abortion is a series of two drugs, taken separately, that are used to terminate a viable pregnancy.

The first drug used is called mifepristone and blocks progesterone, causing your pregnancy to detach from your uterine wall and stop growing. Misoprostol is the next drug used, and it acts by forcing your uterus to contract and expel your pregnancy from your body.

Abortion pill reversal treatment works by counteracting the effects of the first drug, mifepristone.

APR contains a high dose of progesterone, the hormone your pregnancy needs to develop. This high dose of progesterone can reverse the effect of the first abortion pill and allow the pregnancy to continue to grow.

Is APR Safe and How to Get Started

According to research from the National Library of Medicine, abortion pill reversal is considered safe for you as the mother. It has also been found not to increase the risks of birth defects for your baby.

While APR has been proven successful, with an effective rate of 64-68%, time is a crucial factor in the treatment’s success.  The best results are typically seen within the first 24 hours of the first abortion pill being taken, but there have been cases of APR being effective up to 72 hours later.
